Please note: Effective December 21, 2022, the 45-hour broker course will increase to 75 hours and includes cultural competency training.
Effective September 21, 2022, NYS licensees must complete at least two hours of implicit bias awareness training and at least two hours of cultural competency training as part of the 22.5 hours of continuing education required for license renewal.
As New York State DOS has noted, these requirements are based on the license expiration date rather than the date on which a renewal application is submitted for processing. REBNY recently noted these updates as part of a summary of recently amended and adopted State legislation.
Please note: If completing the broker course for continuing education, you must also complete 2.5 hours of ethical business practices and 1 hour of recent legal matters topics to satisfy the requirement.
A recent legislative amendment REMOVED the 15-year real estate broker continuing education exemption and now requires all brokers who were previously exempted to complete continuing education starting July 1, 2021. REBNY is currently offering live distance learning continuing education courses via Zoom along with online, on-demand courses to satisfy all requirements.
Mandatory classes for 22.5 hours will include:
2 hours implicit bias (new requirement)
2 hours cultural competency (new requirement)
3 hours fair housing
2.5 hours ethical business practices
1 hour legal matters
1 hour agency (2 agency hours for initial license renewal)
11 elective hours
All REBNY members are required to complete a mandatory Ethics course specifically tailored for their Membership Division. All Residential Brokerage members are required to complete this course in order to be eligible for access to the RLS and incremental RLS features. Broker A's need to complete the course prior to activating RLS access for their firm. All other Residential Brokerage members must take this course within 90 days of joining REBNY, and existing Residential Brokerage members who have not completed this requirement must complete the course as soon as possible or risk losing RLS access. This course does not satisfy NYS continuing education (CE) requirements for Ethics; no CE hours will be provided for this course as it is a contingency of REBNY membership and not associated with licensing requirements of New York State. REBNY also offers a 2.5 hour course called "Rules of the Road: Ethical Business Practices and Co-Brokering in New York State." This course awards DOS-approved Continuing Education credits in Ethics and also satisfies the mandatory ethics training for participation with the RLS.
