Following news that the Biden Administration has notified the MTA that it should launch an environmental assessment of congestion pricing, which represents a key step toward implementing New York’s first-in-the-nation congestion pricing plan, REBNY President James Whelan released the following statement:
“We applaud the Biden Administration for demonstrating its clear commitment to advancing New York’s congestion pricing plan as quickly as possible. Once implemented, this pioneering initiative will help to reduce traffic and air pollution while generating a new and sustainable stream of much-needed revenue for the mass transit infrastructure that plays such a crucial role in our City’s economy.
“REBNY was proud to work with a broad coalition of stakeholders to successfully advocate for State approval of congestion pricing in 2019 and efforts to get the plan underway have only become more important since that time. As we and stakeholders across New York focus now on economic recovery from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the mass transit revenue generated by congestion pricing will play an important role in advancing a strong recovery.”
