Donation drive will help city's seniors cope with emergencies
July 17, 2013
President, Real Estate Board of New York
Each year during the summer months, REBNY’s Residential Brokerage Division holds an annual donation drive to supply needed goods to fellow New Yorkers. In its 5th year, this summer’s drive is collecting whistles and battery or crank-operated radios for New York City seniors.
Donations are being collected through Friday, Aug. 23 and can be dropped off at the reception area of REBNY, 570 Lexington Avenue, from 11 am to 4 pm Monday to Thursday and from 11 am to 2 pm on Fridays. Please include batteries with the radios.
We have partnered with the NYC Department for the Aging for REBNY’s Annual Summer Donation Drive 2013.
In the wake of Hurricane Sandy and with the summer heat, the needed crank or battery-operated radios will help keep seniors informed in the event of brownouts and whistles will allow for notification of emergency officials and neighbors during an emergency. Each summer thousands of elderly New Yorkers die in heat waves across the city. Thus, this is a great cause for our members to take part in.
Each year, REBNY residential brokers do a great job of coming together and collecting large amounts of needed goods. In past summers, our residential membership collected more than 450 eyeglasses, over 400 cellphones, more than 300 pairs of business shoes for men and women and filled 22 large-sized boxes with elementary school supplies.
Your participation in this year’s donation drive for NYC Seniors is needed. Donations will benefit New Dorp Beach Senior Center Friendship Club on Staten Island which was devastated by Hurricane Sandy. This center services the needs of more than 3,500 seniors enrolled in the program which provides various activities and serves approximately 5,875 meals (breakfast and lunch) per week.
New Dorp Beach Center Friendship Club is funded under a contract with the NYC Department of the Aging as part of the older Americans Act Program administered by the NYS Office for the Aging.
